Happy New Year! It's nice to see you all again.
Today, I was actually working on improving a previous article, but it was interrupted by a sudden hot topic. So, let's talk about the overnight sensation, AssangeDAO.
Before discussing AssangeDAO, let me give you a brief introduction to Julian Assange. Assange is internationally wanted for exposing some dark history and secrets of the United States National Security Agency. He is also the founder of WikiLeaks and is currently being held in the highest-security prison in London.
AssangeDAO is a DAO formed to free Julian Assange. Its main purpose is to raise funds through an auction. Assange and the renowned digital artist @muratpak (a digital artist with over 330,000 Twitter followers) collaborated on a series of NFTs. AssangeDAO hopes to acquire these NFT works through an auction to support Assange. The funds raised from the NFT auction will be used for Julian Assange's defense fund, to pay for legal fees, and to raise awareness of his extradition case.
The governance token issued by AssangeDAO, $JUSTICE, currently does not have a specific use described. However, according to the official website, community members can use it to determine the direction of NFT usage and treasury funds, among other things.
It is worth noting that there is no limit to the issuance of $JUSTICE tokens, and each ETH can receive 1 million $JUSTICE tokens. Additionally, AssangeDAO is only open for 3 days, until February 7th. If the NFT auction is successful, $JUSTICE can be used as a circulating governance token. If the auction fails, $JUSTICE can be refunded in ETH.
Currently, the publicly available member information in AssangeDAO includes the treasury multisig holders: Amir Taaki @Narodism, Rachel-Rose O'Leary (Coindesk writer), Fiskantes (not found on Twitter), McKenna @Crypto_McKenna, and Silke Noa @silkenoa.
The proposal review team consists of @suigenerisjen (Assange's lawyer), @GabrielShipton (Assange's brother), @StellaMoris1 (Assange's wife), and other community administrators.
(Thanks to @hellopandadao for collecting this information.)
Furthermore, the official WikiLeaks Twitter account has pinned a tweet expressing support for AssangeDAO.
Now, let's talk about the issues with this project.
Firstly, there are already many similar FREE DAO projects. According to a friend of mine, this is a niche in the blockchain prison break track. The most famous project in this track is People, but the nature of AssangeDAO is completely different from that of ConstitutionalDAO.
ConstitutionalDAO was launched to crowdfund the participation in the auction of a first edition copy of the US Constitution. People tokens were obtained by paying ETH, but the auction ultimately failed. ConstitutionalDAO announced the cessation of operations and allowed donors to voluntarily redeem their ETH. (The subsequent marketing of People is another story, not discussed here.)
However, AssangeDAO is participating in an NFT auction, which is fundamentally different from a copy of the US Constitution. Moreover, the AssangeDAO team includes Assange's immediate family members and interest groups. Therefore, regardless of whether AssangeDAO is successful in the auction, the profits will go to the AssangeDAO team.
Regarding the governance token $JUSTICE, AssangeDAO has not made any public commitments. For example, it is unclear whether it will be listed on DEX or CEX, whether liquidity will be added, and there is no related roadmap. The worst-case scenario is that this donation is purely a donation, and participants will receive nothing in return.
In addition, there is a rumor that the mastermind behind AssangeDAO is a British person who can speak Chinese and once said on Discord, "British people don't cheat Chinese people."
Finally, the purpose of this article is not to promote AssangeDAO or to belittle the project. It is simply a sharing of my research on hot projects. Everyone should conduct their own research and investigation.
